Nichols Lake Falls (Prospect River Falls), Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia

These falls are located along Prospect River as it empties into Nichols Lake. They are small in size and angle. The falls are approximately 10 feet high and fall at an angle 50 degrees. At the falls location there is a split in the river which provides two falls side by side split by a rocky outcrop of the same height and angle. They are easily accessed along the Nichols Lake Loop near the area of Hatched Lake. To the falls is approximately 1.5kms. The whole loop is approximately 4kms.

Important Information – These falls are located in the area of Hatchet Lake along the Nichols Lake hiking trails. This trail can also lead you to the the edge of Nichols Lake where you can find two small lakeside beaches. The main trail is a well maintained gravel path. You can make this trail into a loop by using the lakeside human trafficked trailed along the lake. This is a narrow path on exposed roots, rocks, dirt/mud and rocks. There is a trail access point along the main road. This road is Prospect Rd. There is also a trail access point behind the Prospect Community Centre.

Directions – If you are leaving from Halifax, Nova Scotia you will want to get onto Prospect Rd. near the beginning of Highway 103 (Fishermen’s Memorial Highway) on the edge of Bayer’s Lake. Easiest access is using the Northwest Arm Roundabout onto St. Margarets Bay Rd. This road leads you to Prospect Rd before reaching the start of Highway 103. Once on Prospect Rd follow until you reach Prospect Community Centre. Park on the general parking lot and walk around the building to find the trailhead.
