Little Meander River Falls, Newport, Nova Scotia

GPS : 44.996577, -63.938277

This picturesque waterfall is worth the short walk high along the edge of the canyon. Starting along the river before following the trail up along the crest of the canyon, all the way to the falls. When reaching the falls you must travel down into the canyon on a rather steep decline. The falls fall at an approx angle of 90 degrees and are about 15-20 feet in height. There is a large pool at their base. High water levels could make accessing the top of the falls difficult.

Important Information – These falls do offer you a place to swim and jump if you choose to. The water gets pretty murky after rain showers from localized sediment. Depth is unknown but the pool is large enough for multiple people to enjoy at once. The human trafficked trail is approx 1.5kms in length one way. You will be walking on exposed tree roots, rocks, gravel, and dirt/mud. As noted above, you will be walking on the edge of a canyon so do so with caution. The entrance to the trail is off Mackay Rd once you travel over the small bridge crossing Little Meander River on your right heading upstream if following my directions. Park wherever you can get your car off the pavement on the shoulder of the road. Once on the trail, you will see multiple human trafficked trails. I suggest staying on top of the crest for the duration, avoiding the trails closer to the edge of the canyon. Mainly straight to start slowly veering right then left until you reach the edge of the canyon meets the river below. This will lead left until you see the falls and a trail down the edge of the canyon. Mackay Rd is a paved road with lots of signage as Smileys Provincial Park is located just up the street from here.

Directions – If traveling from Halifax you will be heading towards the valley on Highway 101 (Harvest Highway). Before you reach Windsor you will be taking exit 4, heading towards Newport Corner or the signs for Smileys Provincial Park. At this exit’s end, you will be turning right onto Highway 1 (Evangeline Trail) and follow it until a left-hand turns onto Highway 215. Taking this left turn and following Highway 215 until you Reach Mackay Rd on your right. Turning right and driving approx 5kms to the bridge over Little Meander River.
