Healy Brook Falls consists of 1 main fall along with multiple smaller falls that guide you through a high walled canyon. The canyon has a pool at the end prior to continuing the river downstream. The main fall, which is the first fall you’ll encounter on the trail is approx 10-15 feet high and falls at an approx 75-degree angle. As you continue downstream into the canyon, you’ll see multiple cascades for 100-200 meters until you reach the end. They all vary in sizes and angles in which they drop. Unfortunately when I visited the water levels were very low.
Important Information – These falls are located very close to the access road. It is only approx 100m walk from trailhead to the main fall. The canyon is approx 20m’s from the main fall and it runs for about 100-200m’s before falling into a pool that moves the water downstream. You do not have the opportunity to jump at these falls but if the water level is high enough you can swim at the end of the canyon in the small pool that will be present. The trailhead is located off the main road, it is easy to navigate, and the terrain has complied with loose rocks, tree routes, and moss-covered grounds. It is a short path and is on the left hand side of the road after the bridge if traveling from my directions offered. You can choose to walk the path that over looks the canyon from above or walk straight through the canyon. Do so are your own risk as it will be slippery. Also to note, on the right hand side of the road is another trailhead. Upstream is blue falls. The hike is said to be approx 1-1.5kms in length and the falls are suppose to be approx 25-30 feet high. Most of the roads in this area are not paved, so drive with caution. Online you will find blue falls labeled at the end of a road. This road is someone’s private driveway and there are signs present not to trespass, do so at your own risk but know there is another access point across the road from the Healy Brook Falls trailhead.
Directions – Healy Brook Falls is located in Outram, which is just outside of Middleton. If you are leaving from Halifax you will head towards the valley on highway 101 (Harvest Highway). You will be looking for exit 18. At the end of the off-ramp, turn right onto Brooklyn Rd. Follow Brooklyn Rd until you reach a left hand turn onto Mt. Hanley Rd. Once on Mt. Hanley Rd, you will see a quick right hand turn onto Clearance Rd. Follow Clearance Rd all the way to a right hand turn onto Nichols Mountain Rd. Once you reach the top of Nichols Mountain Rd, you will take a right hand turn onto Arlington Rd. Once you are on this road follow until you come to a left hand turn onto Outram Rd. Follow Outram Rd all the way to the destination which will be straight, up and down, around a right hand bend which turns the road into Shore E Rd, a left hand bend, over a small bridge is where you pull off and park. The entrance to Healy Brook Falls is on the left hand side of the road. I chose this route because despite what your gps may tell you, most of the roads in this area are not paved nor are they attended which makes some of them undriveable.
