Weir Brook Falls(The Tubs), Newport Corner, Nova Scotia

GPS : 44.961373, -63.975086

Weir Brook Falls are not large in size and the water volume varies but they are a great little spot for a scenic swim. These falls unfortunately fall in between multiple private properties so how you reach them is your own decision. Keep in mind that you can walk upstream in the river or on its edge with no legal repercussions. The falls themselves vary in size. The lower set of falls near the tubs are no larger than 10 ft in height and falling at a 75 degree angle. The upper falls feed each other. The bottom portion is approx 25ft falling at an angle of 50 degrees and the upper portion is approx 15 ft falling at an angle of 70 degrees. Together they make close to 40 ft in height.

Important Information – These falls are in between private properties so respect the land owners. The falls so offer a place to swim and jump at your own risk at the bottom falls where the tubs are. The tubs are small pockets along the river that have been carved out by flowing water. If you wish to visit the larger upper falls do so with caution. The local land owners have let their property line barb wire fences fall apart and hang into the river. I learned the hard way. It is approx 3kms upstream from the lower falls to reach the upper falls. The water level was low when I visited so I was able to walk the river the entire way. however, they’re human trafficked trails along the rivers edge throughout that appear and disappear. Use at your own discretion. I have visited these falls twice now and used a different way both times. If you know of a better way to reach these falls comment on this post. Trip 1 I turned right off Highway 1 (Evangeline Trail) just past the quarry on your right (civic address 6398) and followed this dirt/gravel to a small pull off on your right on the edge of a large field just before the road veers left. Parking here and walking the edge of this field for approx 200ms to its conclusion identifying a human trafficked woods trail on your right. Following this trail for no more than 100ms to the edge of the ravine. Using the ropes placed in this location for assistance down to the base of the bottom falls and the location of the first tub. Human trafficked woods trials can be identified on your left just before you head down into the ravine and across the ravine.  These head upstream. All in all this option was less than a kilometre round trip. Trip 2 I used Collier Rd. Collier Rd is just a few kilometres past the old road used for trip 1. Driving Collier Rd until reaching a old bridge that allows you to cross Weir Brook. Park here and make your way down to the river, heading downstream.  Approx 300ms into your walk you will come to a junction point. Heading downstream 3kms will bring you to the lower falls and the tubs. Turning left and heading upstream for 600ms will bring you to the larger upper falls. Both heading downstream and upstream will offer side tributaries feeding into the main river that could be an added bonus during high water volume. To reach the falls stay on Weir Brook throughout.

Directions – These falls are located in Newport Corner, Nova Scotia. If you are leaving from Halifax you will want to head towards the valley on Highway 101 (Harvest Highway) until exit 4. At exit 4 you will turn right at the end of the off ramp and drive along Highway 1 (Evangeline Trail). Just before the junction on Highway 1 with it continuing on your right and Highway 215 starting on your left is the first option to view these falls on the gravel/dirt road. Parking at the edge of the field and walking the edge until you reach its conclusion and the woods trail into the ravine. Just after this junction continuing along Highway 1 is Collier Rd on your right. Driving Collier Rd to the old bridge and parking. Heading downstream to the junction and deciding to go downstream or upstream.
