Hart Lake Brook offers two stunning waterfalls. The upper falls are bigger than the lower falls. The upper falls have two 90 degree drops stacked closely on top of each other. The top fall is approx 10 feet in height with the bottom fall approx 30 feet. The lower falls are set up in the same way but smaller. Two 90 degree drop falls stacked closely on top of each other, each approx 15 feet in height. The set is just a few kilometres away from each other. The upper falls are no more than 200ms off the shores of Hart Lake and the lower falls are much closer to Highway 4.
Important Information – These falls are on the same brook and only a few kilometers away from one another. The upper falls have a different access point than the lower falls although you could bushwhack upstream if you choose to. The upper falls will have you drive behind the quarry on Lafarge Lane to the small cottage community of Hart Lake. The upper falls are no more than 200ms from the road. This is a hard 200ms as you have to find the safest route down to the river edge in the ravine. You will be walking on deadfall, roots, rocks, and dirt/mud. Once you get to the river’s edge walk a short distance upstream to the falls. No real path exists but simply parking and walking downhill at a 45-degree angle in most spots will bring you to the river’s edge. Lafarge Lane will turn into Hart Lake Road. Driving Hart Lake Road until you see Hummingbird Drive on your right. Just before Hummingbird Drive, on your left will be a driveway that pulls up to a cottage. Before this driveway, there is a small opening entering the woods. This is where you should make your way into the woods, down into the ravine to the river’s edge. The falls are to your right upstream. As for the lower falls along this brook. You will use an old logging/ATV trail off Highway 4 beyond Lafarge Lane towards Ski Wentworth. Once you pass or leave Lafarge Lane towards Ski Wentworth coming off Folly Mountain you will take your second right off the Highway. The first right is gated. Your second right is an old logging/ATV trail that is dirt and veers to your left. The entrance is narrow then it widens as this is the first option where you can park. This old logging/ATV trail is easy to find and navigate. Once you find this old logging/ATV trail all you have to do is simply follow it. The bonus about this trail is that it will first lead you to Harts Lake Brook’s lower falls, then if you continue onward for another kilometer you will reach Horse Pasture Brook which has 7 waterfalls for you to see in a 1-kilometer stretch heading downstream. Neither the upper or lower falls offer pools deep enough to swim or jump. The trail to the lower falls is very easy and is no longer than 600ms depending on where you park. You can pull off Highway 4 and park in an open space near the Highway or you can pull off Highway 4 and drive the old logging/ATV trail to an open field where the trail veers to the left. Parking here is suggested for a shorter 600m walk to the falls. If you park just off the Highway, your walk will be just over a kilometer to the falls.
Directions – The falls are located in Wentworth Valley area just beyond Folly Mountain. If you are leaving Halifax, you will want to get on Highway 102 (Veteran’s Memorial Highway) towards Truro. Once you reach Truro, you will take the offramp towards New Brunswick onto Highway 104 (Trans Canada Highway). Driving until Exit 11. Taking Exit 11 and turning left onto Highway 4. Driving Highway 4 passed Folly Lake. To the upper falls you will turn on the first right passed Folly Lake which looks like the entrance to the quarry on your right. This is Lafarge Lane. Following Lafarge Lane until it turns into Hart Lake Road. Driving Hart Lake Road to your entrance into the woods on your left slightly before Hummingbird Drive on your right. Walk down the ravine to the river’s edge and turn right, heading upstream. To the lower falls, you will pass Folly Lake and Lafarge Lane. After Lafarge Lane, you will be taking your second right off Highway 4. This turn is unmarked but your first choice is gated. Take the old logging/ATV trail option after this gated option. Drive the trail to an open field and park on the far side of the field where the trail goes back into the woods. Follow the trail all the way to Hart Lake Brook, on your right will the lower falls 100ms upstream.
