Little River Falls, Sunken Lake, Nova Scotia

GPS : 44.992359, -64.475974

This fall was quickly added to my list of favorites. The trail leads you to a beautiful view overlooking the gorge below with the fall directly below you. At this location, you will encounter a unique hand-crafted kilometre marker stating distances to places around the world. The fall itself is approx 20 feet in height and falls at approx an 80-degree angle with a pool at its base large enough and deep enough to go for a swim.

Important Information – The woods trail will lead you to a beautiful look off and a stunning waterfall. This waterfall has a deep enough pool at its base for a swim but I do not suggest any jumping. The trail is very easy to follow and only the last portion with the decline is troubling. It is no longer than 50ms downhill. Expect to be walking on an old logging road and a human trafficked trail with exposed roots, rocks, and dirt/mud. There is a section that has a rope to help aid you down into the gorge at the end.

Directions – This waterfall is located in Sunken Lake area of Nova Scotia. If leaving from Halifax you will want to head towards the valley on Highway 101 (Harvest Highway). Following Highway 101 until Exit 12. Taking Exit 12 and turning left at the end of the off-ramp. Following this road called New Canaan Road until you reach a left turn onto Highbury School Road. Turning left onto Highbury School Road and driving it to its completion and turning left onto White Rock Road. Following White Rock Road until you reach a right turn onto Deep Hollow Road. Following Deep Hollow Road until you reach a right turn onto Sunken Lake Road. Following Sunken Lake Road to John Jordan Road on your right which is an unpaved road. It is the right turn before Little River Lake Road. Once you are on this unpaved road you will arrive at a Y-Intersection. Park here and following the trail straight ahead, do not turn left and continue on. You will walk this trail straight ahead for approx 1km until you reach an easily identifiable trailhead on your right. It is marked by minor signage, with a small rockpile, and a little flag. The human trafficked trail to follow is well marked with flagging tape and has a rope tied to the bases of trees to help you down into the gorge on a 50-60 degree decline at the end. When you arrive at the look off and signage post, the decline is to your right approx 50ms. This woods trial is approx 800ms to reach the waterfall. Roundtrip expect to walk 3kms.
