Sugarloaf Mountain Falls, Kingross, Nova Scotia

GPS : 46.426883, -60.932863

These falls are very unique and first for me. Driving down West Big Intervale Rd. Looking out the window and up the mountain to see a break in the trees. A large waterfall comes bursting off the mountainside to quickly disappear from the roadside view behind the treeline below. This fall is approx. 60 ft in height falling mostly at 90 degrees. About halfway upstream to the top fall, you will encounter a 10-15 foot waterfall falling at 80 degrees and to add, is the wide flowing river roadside is being fed by a small 5-10 waterfall falling at 80 degrees, emptying the rushing water down the mountain side from the fall way above.

Important Information – These falls are one of the hardest falls I have tried to reach. Seeing them roadside offers enough pleasure as you need. They do not offer you a spot to swim or jump. The roadside river has deep spots to submerge yourself. No real path or trail head exists. If you wish to reach the base of the upper fall you must be prepared to get wet and use all your hiking skills. To start you need to pull off West Big Intervale Rd. I in front of the feeding 5-10 waterfall into the river. Then you must walk through the river to the other side. It is a wide river. Then do your best to find the best way into the forest over the rivers steep banks. Closest to the feeding waterfall the better. Follow the river upstream from here. It is approx. 1kms from here upstream. Reaching the base of the falls to see the river poor down the mountain side. Do this hike upstream at your own risk.

Directions – If you are traveling from Halifax you will head towards Truro on Highway 102(Veterans Memorial Highway). Once reaching Truro you will drive past Truro to exit 15W towards Cape Breton on Highway 104(Trans-Canada Highway). Following until you reach the Canso Causeway. Once you cross the Canso Causeway into Cape Breton you will drive past the roundabout on your left and turn left onto Highway 105(Trans-Canada Highway) heading towards Baddeck/Sydney/Cheticamp. This Highway will bring you to a fork in the road. At this location Highway, 105 will continue right and the Cabot Trail will start on your Left. Turn left onto the Cabot Trail. Follow the Cabot Trail to North-East Margaree. Turn right onto East Big Intervale Rd. once in the area of North-East Margaree. Follow East Big Intervale Rd. until you reach Kingross, approx. 12kms. On your left will be Kingross Crossing Rd. along with signage for Kingross Quilts. Turning left and following this road until you cross a bridge and reach its end. Turn left here onto West Big Intervale Rd. and drive until you see the small feeder fall across the river. It is in the location of signage that says dead end and Big Intervale Fishing Lodge.
