Dawson Brook Falls, Ellerhouse, Nova Scotia

GPS : 44.924262, -63.979504

Waited way too long to visit these falls. They are very impressive. Multiple falls all within 100ms of each other, big and small. The top fall is the largest, standing at approx. 30 ft in height and falling at an angle of approx. 80 degrees. The pool at its base is large enough for a swim. As the river continues downstream from this pool, the gorge narrows and 2 stepped falls no bigger than 5-10 ft in height drop one after another. Just 20 feet downstream from these 2 stepped falls is another small 5 ft fall as the gorge widens again. At this point, the river veers right inline with the gorge but is fed on the left by another river which has a 15-20 foot fall feeding into the mainstream at approx. 70 degrees changing direction in the middle.

Important Information – These falls offer a small area to swim but not jump near the base of the main falls. The trail to these falls starts off as an overgrown driveway/road then turns into a human trafficked trail. Be prepared to walk on mud/dirt, exposed tree roots, and rocks. The trail itself is relatively flat in the beginning with a low decline down towards the gorge. The trail to the falls is no longer 700ms. Once you reach the gorge the climb down in spots is steep but doesn’t require the use of your hands or rope. If looking downstream near the top of the main falls, the way down is on this side of the river if you wish to reach the pool at its base. Both sides of the rivers have easily identified paths to walk the edge of the gorge looking down. The photo above shows the trail head. I found 2 trail heads each marked by boulders blocking vehicle access on old overgrown driveways/roads 100ms from each other. The second entrance is more gravel and ends in a small cul-de-sac. The first entrance will bring you on the right-hand side of the river looking downstream and the second entrance will bring you to the left-hand side of the river. Your choice but the first entry will avoid crossing the river at the top of the main falls to use the path down to the bottom of the main falls and its pool. These trail heads are off of a gravel service road that is 3kms down the gravel service road that runs parallel to the highway 101 (Harvest Highway). Driving 3kms down the main service road and turning right. You should see some flagging tape in a tree and also an old rusted gate swung open. The trail heads are on the right-hand side of the service road less than 500ms in with the first entrance at the top of a small decline and the second down the small decline.

Directions – Located in Ellerhouse, Nova Scotia. If leaving from Halifax you will head towards the valley on Highway 101 (Harvest Highway). Looking for exit 4 that is just passed the Ellerhouse rd bridge. Turn right at the end of this off-ramp onto Highway 1 (Evangeline Trail). Looking for Ellerhouse Rd on your right approx 2kms down Highway 1. Taking this right onto Ellerhouse Rd, follow over the bridge and on your left you will see Williams Rd. Turning left onto Williams Rd, follow until a fork in the road, taking the left option that is marked 15 feet in by yellow and black signs and a service road sign. Follow this old service road for approx. 2.5kms. The Service road you are looking for is going to be on your right with an old rusted gate.
