Black Hole Brook Falls, Baxters Harbour, Nova Scotia

GPS : 45.231753, -64.487676

These falls are located near Haunted Falls which are mistakenly called Black Hole Brook Falls often. Haunted Falls are much bigger and easier to get to. Black Hole Brook Falls is upstream from Haunted Falls a short distance, approx. 1km. These falls have multiple drops at different heights and angles but none bigger than 15 feet. The photos below turned out poor but you can see twin sister falls around a large boulder with another cascade behind and up above to the left. The trail seemed to disappear due to high water levels. Was unable to find a way to the top of the larger cascade. It was a fun walk through the river upstream.

Important Information – These falls were hard to reach due to the lack of trail traffic and high water levels. They do not offer anywhere to jump but some pools get deep enough if you wish to cool off as you head upstream. When first entering the main trail off Black Hole Rd. which will be on your right if traveling to the end portion of Black Hole Rd where it meets Old Baxters Mill Rd with a sharp left turn you will head downhill. This trail is an old road so it’s now an overgrown gravel road. Coming to a fork in the road. From starting point to rivers edge it’s approx. 800ms going either left or right. Left will bring you to the top of Haunted Falls or a trail out towards the Bay of Fundy on a human trafficked trail walking on exposed roots, mud/dirt, and rocks. The right will bring you down to the river’s edge upstream from Haunted Falls which is a continuation of the overgrown gravel road. Black Hole Brook Falls is upstream from this location Approx 800ms. A trail appears here and there on both sides of the river.

Directions – These falls are located at the sharp left turn onto Old Baxter Mill Rd from Black Hole Rd. If you are traveling from Halifax you will travel on Highway 101 (Harvest Highway) towards the valley. Taking exit 12 for Kentville. Turn right off the off-ramp onto New Minas Connector Rd. This turns into Middle Dyke Rd. Follow it until you reach the end of this portion of the road that intersects with Highway 341. Turn left onto Highway 341 then a quick right back onto the second portion of Middle Dyke Rd. Follow until you reach the intersection with Highway 221. Turn right here towards Sheffield Mills. You will reach another intersection where Highway 221 continues on the right and Black Hole Rd starts on the left. Turn left onto Black Hole Rd and drive it until its end where you will arrive at a sharp left turn. The trailhead is on the right of this sharp left turn.
