Haunted Falls, Baxters Harbour, Nova Scotia

GPS : 45.233965, -64.493172

The roar from these falls can be heard as soon as you start walking. A pleasant surprise was the height of these falls, approx. 50ft in height and falling at a 90-degree angle. The area surrounding these falls make them unique and a new favorite for me, especially during low tide.

Important Information – This is a single fall that falls into a small pool at its base before continuing downstream. The fall does have a pool at its base to possibly go for a dip but do so at your own risk. It did not appear deep enough to jump into. The volume flowing was high when I visited which isn’t ideal for a swim. The trail itself is relatively flat throughout until you decline down into the canyon to reach the base of the fall. This decline is steep but worth it. There are 2 ways down that I encountered. 1 is a steep staircase-like rock face with rope assistance and the other is a 50-degree angle slope. The second option requires you to go up and over where the rope section is and come down its backside. Both options can be very tricky. The trail is largely exposed roots, gravel, rocks and mud/dirt prior to the steep section to reach the bottom of the canyon. The trail entirety is approx. 1 km from start to the falls. To get down is approx 150ms via second options and 100ms via the first option. This being said, when you arrive at the falls you will be on top of them and in order to get down, you need to cross the river which has no bridge. Your distance to the beginning of the decline varies by how far upstream you go to cross the river. The path is easily identifiable from the main road where you park and while you walk towards the falls. It is an overgrown road on some maps labeled Bigelow Cove Rd which is on the right of Black Hole Rd at the sharp left-hand turn onto Old Baxter Mill Rd. Once on the trail, you will come to a fork in the road. Both options, right and left will bring you to the top of the falls and rivers edge. The option on the right will bring you farther upstream than the option on the left. Both are equal in length to the river’s edge.

Directions – These falls are located at the sharp left turn onto Old Baxter Mill Rd from Black Hole Rd. If you are traveling from Halifax you will travel on Highway 101 (Harvest Highway) towards the valley. Taking exit 12 for Kentville. Turn right off the off-ramp onto New Minas Connector Rd. This turns into Middle Dyke Rd. Follow it until you reach the end of this portion of the road that intersects with Highway 341. Turn left onto Highway 341 then a quick right back onto the second portion of Middle Dyke Rd. Follow until you reach the intersection with Highway 221. Turn right here towards Sheffield Mills. You will reach another intersection where Highway 221 continues on the right and Black Hole Rd starts on the left. Turn left onto Black Hole Rd and drive it until its end  where you will arrive at a sharp left turn. The trailhead is on the right of this sharp left turn.
