What a nice surprise this short system was. Having multiple falls at different heights and angles. The largest being approx 30ft in height falling at a 90-degree angle to go along with multiple small drops of 5-10ft falling at all different angles. During low tide, if you proceed to the end of the trail you will find yourself on the edge of the Bay of Fundy where a 5-10ft tall, 90-degree angle waterfall bleeds the freshwater into the ocean.
Important Information – The falls do not offer anywhere to swim or jump but if the tallest fall has lots of volume flowing through it the spray is very refreshing. The trail to these falls is travel friendly as it is mainly flat minus a small 50ft section down to the bottom of the main fall. The trail is human carved through natural vegetation. You will be walking on exposed roots, some gravel and rocks, and mud/dirt. It is easy to follow this trail right until the end. The trail is approx 1.5kms in length from start to the ocean’s edge. It runs on the right-hand side of the river when walking downstream and starts directly off the main road where you park. When parking you will look for a small overgrown driveway sized clearing on the right-hand side of the road. This small clearing is the trailhead and is before you cross the river which runs underneath the road with no signage. The trailhead is approx 150ms after the sharp left turn on this road. There is a picture above to show you what to look for.
Directions – These falls are located on Old Baxter Mill Rd which begins after the sharp left turn off of Black Hole Rd. If you are traveling from Halifax you will travel on Highway 101 (Harvest Highway) towards the valley. Taking exit 12 for Kentville. Turn right off the off-ramp onto New Minas Connector Rd. This turns into Middle Dyke Rd. Follow it until you reach the end of this portion of the road that intersects with Highway 341. Turn left onto Highway 341 then a quick right back onto the second portion of Middle Dyke Rd. Follow until you reach the intersection with Highway 221. Turn right here towards Sheffield Mills. You will reach another intersection where Highway 221 continues on the right and Black Hole Rd starts on the left. Turn left onto Black Hole Rd and drive it until its end where you will arrive at a sharp left turn. The trailhead is 150ms after this sharp left turn.
