Fantum Falls, Upper Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia

GPS : 45.15724, -62.88729

Fantum or Phantom Falls when flowing heavily can be heard from distances away. Visited in spring and the amount of volume flowing was high. It was powerful. These falls are surprisingly large and fall at different angles but mainly 45 degrees. They are approx 60 ft in height. The short trail to the falls is beautiful and the surprisingly large falls are a great reward.

Important Information – The trail to these falls shown above will bring you to the top of the falls. A trail veering off to the right once at the falls will bring you down to the river’s edge to see the falls head-on. The falls don’t offer any wheres to jump but I am sure you could find a deep enough portion of the river close by to get in. The trail is a human carved trail so expect to walk on exposed tree roots, dirt or mud, rocks, and gravel. The ending of the trail brings you to the top of the waterfall which is slippery in spots so be careful. The trail itself is approx 600ms in length and relatively flat until a small 45-degree decline down to the river’s edge.

Directions – If leaving from Halifax you will head towards Halifax International Airport on Highway 102 (Veterans Memorial Highway). Before reaching the Airport you will take exit 5A turning right into the Aerotech Business Park. Taking your first left onto Pratt and Whitney Dr before turning right onto Old Guysborough Rd (Highway 212). Following Old Guysborough Rd until the end when you reach Highway 357. Turn left onto Highway 357. Highway 357 will eventually turn into Highway 224 and then into Highway 336. The right-hand turn that leads you to the falls is off Highway 336 just past Dean Back Rd. It is labeled with a sign for the falls and/or the gypsum quarry. This road starts as a short 45-degree decline before leveling out. Beware this road is not paved and can be very bumpy. The entrance to the falls in the photo above is approx 2.5kms up this road. You will pass over the small bridge and quarry on your left.
