Finally, I made it. These falls have been on my list since last summer. You’ll understand from the photos and when you visit. Located close to Upper Stewiacke in Meadowvale. The falls themselves are different as the top 90 degree fall drops into a deep pool at its base. This fall feeds the next fall just a few feet from the edge of the pool. The bottom fall drops at a 45-degree angle and continues the river downstream. The top fall is approx 40 ft and the bottom fall is approx 15 ft in height.
Important Information – These falls require a very short walk to reach. On a hot day with a steady flow, you could easily swim in the pool at the top falls base. This pool is deep but very small. If the water is flowing hard be careful if you chose to enter or decide to jump in from surrounding ledges. The trail is approx 200-300ms in length and is mainly a human traffic path. Expect to walk on exposed tree roots, dirt or mud, rocks, and loose gravel. The incline down to the falls is not anything more than 45 degrees at times. The road to these falls is Higgins Mill Rd. This road is not paved and can be very bumpy at times. Drive with care. The trail entrance is shown in the photo above. The entrance is on the hill on the right-hand side before you turn right and see an old house. It is not marked and there are many options but each of them in this area will bring you down to the river’s edge to walk upstream. They’ll be a little parking area adjacent to this right-hand turn before the road continues upwards. If you pass the old house on the right, you have passed the entrance down to the river’s edge as you are now above the top waterfall.
Directions – If you are leaving Halifax you will travel towards Truro on highway 102 (Veterans Memorial Highway). Before reaching Truro you will be taking exit 11 into Stewiacke. Turning right off the exit onto Main St. Main St turns into Kitchener St before turning into Stewiacke Rd. Following Stewiacke Rd until you reach the intersection with Meadowvale Rd on your right and S Branch Rd on your left. Turn right onto Meadowvale Rd. Continue on Meadowvale Rd until you reach Higgins Mill Rd. The falls are on this road.
