Arrowhead Falls, Central New Annan, Nova Scotia

GPS : 45.615989, -63.371972

This fall really sneaks up on you. Laying just behind an individual’s house and just seconds from where you park on the road. The flowing water carved a unique path through the residing bedrock. The falls are not the tallest or the widest but have become a personal favorite of mine. They are approx 30 feet in high and the main drop falls at an angle of 90 degrees. Near the top of the falls, they’re a few small cascades feeding into the main drop. The opening between the bedrock is not very large which adds to the quality of surprise you will have. The river falls into the pool below that is thin but deep before it shallows out and flows downstream.

Important Information – Arrowhead falls offers you the chance to swim and jump. I chose to climb across the broken down tree that goes from side to side over the river but do that at your own risk. The residing bedrock that has been carved leaves a higher jump on the side closest to the road. The pool at the bottom of the falls is rather deep and large enough for multiple people to enjoy at once. You can even swim from the trail base directly under the falling water. The surrounding rocks are slippery so be careful. The trail itself is very short and easy minus the last 50 feet down a steep decline. A rope has been tied to multiple tree roots for use to help you down the steep decline. Use it at your own risk. The trail is approx 150ms in length. The trailhead is shown in the photos present above. You will walk down this short patch of grass to an opening on your right that leads you to the river’s edge. Follow the river downstream for less than 20 feet on the right-hand side of the river until you reach a small human trafficked path. This small path may be hard to see but if you walk the short distance down the river on the right-hand side, just walk up a small incline to reach the top of the residing bedrock. You will see the rope tied to the tree roots on the other side heading down the steep face. This route is in full attempt to avoid trespassing on the individual’s property. You will mainly be walking on dirt, loose rocks, bedrock and tree roots.

Directions – These falls are located just outside of West New Annan. If you are leaving from Halifax you will drive towards Truro on Highway 102 (Veterans Memorial Highway) until you reach the end. Taking the left hand turn onto highway 104 (Trans Canada Highway). Following Highway 104 until exit 11, you will turn left at the end of the off ramp onto Highway 4. Follow Highway 4 until you reach Highway 246 on your right. Turn onto Highway 246 driving towards West New Annan. Driving through West New Annan towards Central New Annan and Warwick Mountain. Staying on Highway 246 for the entirety of the drive until you reach Warwick Mountain Rd, turn right on this road. The road is gravel. Follow this road until you reach a section of the road that has steel guard rails on both sides, the road begins to have an incline. Just beyond these rails you will see a lone house on the left hand side, the falls are directly behind this house. Just before the house on the left-hand side is the trailhead. Try to avoid parking in front of the house and avoid walking on the property.
