The main falls have a wide rock face that after a heavy rainfall would make for quite the sight. The main falls are approx 40 feet high and fall at an angle of approx 80-85 degrees. The smaller falls just above the main falls are small, approx 2-3 feet high and fall at an angle of 90 degrees. Each has its own respective pool at its base, the top pool is much deeper than the bottom pool. I have read a lot of 50 feet high comments online, having physically scaled the rock race this is a misrepresentation of the waterfall unless my depth perception was way off the day I visited.
Important information – The main waterfall does not allow you to swim or jump but the top, smaller fall does. The top fall which is almost directly on top of the main fall has a deep pool at its base along with multiple rock faces on its side to jump into the pool below. The distance to reach these falls is short but the terrain is difficult. Ropes are present to help move you up and down the hill. You will be walking on dirt, loose rocks and tree roots. The distance down the hill is approx 100ms or less. The trailhead is located off of a gravel road on the right-hand side of the road near a left-hand turn in the road. You will see an old lobster trap slowly dismantling at the trailhead to reach the base of the main falls. Approx 50 feet into this trail you will see the rope tied to tree bases on your left. Use this rope at your own risk. If you wish to go to the top of the main falls and in the pool, at the base of the smaller falls you will see another path approx 20 feet to the left of the first trail mentioned. Follow this trail straight on a gradual decline down the hill until you come to the edge of the gorge. From here you will see the smaller fall, its pool and the main fall on your right.
Directions – These falls are located just outside of Wentworth Station in West New Annan. If you are leaving from Halifax you will drive towards Truro on Highway 102 (Veterans Memorial Highway) until you reach the end. Taking the left-hand turn onto highway 104 (Trans Canada Highway). Following Highway 104 until exit 11, you will turn left at the end of the off-ramp onto Highway 4. Follow Highway 4 until you reach Highway 246 on your right. Turn onto Highway 246 driving towards West New Annan. You will come to a street on your right-hand side called Axe Handle Factory Lane. This Lane has two entrances, take the second entrance. The second entrance might not be labeled but just know it is the first right-hand turn after the first entrance to Axe Handle Factory Lane. Follow this gravel road up a small inclined hill, to your left will be clearing that its a blueberry field. Drive past this field. You will see a small parking area on the right-hand side of the road just before a left-hand turn in the road. Just at the end of your sight around this left-hand turn you will see a small wooden bridge. Parking on the small parking area that really is just a larger shoulder on the road. Both trailheads mentioned above will be right there for you.
