Liscombe River Falls, Liscomb, Nova Scotia

GPS : 45.034911, -62.105176

The main fall is part of the Liscombe River Trail system, it marks approx highway point. An additional fall can be seen from the highway either at the end of your hike or just driving by. It will be on the left-hand side of the road if traveling from Halifax and it will be on the right-hand side of the road if you are finishing the hike heading back to where you entered the hike (if you chose to do the hike upstream on the left-hand side). It is approx 5 feet high and falls at an angle for 90 degrees. As for the main fall itself, it is located approx 4kms into the trail and will be on your left-hand side when crossing the bridge over the river if you choose to walk the trail upstream on the left-hand side. The fall is approx 25-30 feet high and falls at multiple angles as it drops multiple times. The falls are broken into multiple drops stacked on top of each other. The rock face is slowly being carved away from the moving water. The river below is not overly deep and there is not a pool at the base. The river continues between the rocky cliffs on both sides under the bridge until it widens up again continuing downriver. Also to note, just around the corner of the main falls is a man-made fish ladder. This ladder is large and easily visible when walking on the left-hand side of the river heading towards the main fall. The fish ladder will be across the river from you, it has multiple drops.

Important Information – These falls and fish ladder does not offer the opportunity to jump but you can swim in a small pool depending on the water levels just downstream from the main fall and around the river’s bank from the fish ladder. When looking at the photo, the small swimming pool will be on the right hand side near the center of the photo. As noted above these falls and fish ladder are part of a hiking trail. The entirety of the trail is approx 8kms. The main fall and fish ladder are at the halfway point and the smaller fall visible from the road could be at the end or beginning of the trail depending on what side of the river you choose to walk upstream. The trail is relatively flat the whole way besides a few inclines that don’t last very long on the left-hand side of the river if walking upstream. The terrain starts off wide and flat, made with gravel but quickly turns into a small and narrow human trafficked path. You will be walking along the edge of the river which means some areas will be muddy. The path will mostly be dirt, loose rocks and tree roots with a couple small wooden bridges to cross along the way on both sides of the river. The trail heads for both sides of the river are off of the main road to your left if traveling from Halifax. The left-hand side of the river heading upstream has the entrance marked. This entrance is just before the turn into the Liscombe Lodge Resort on your right. The right-hand side entrance is past the Resort, over an overpass and approx 100 meters down the road from the overpass on your left. With this being said, the trail is properly marked throughout with flagging tape and some signs. It is very hard to get lost. Look for the green and pink flagging tape.

Directions – These falls and fish ladder is located in Liscomb, Nova Scotia. If leaving from Halifax you will head towards the Eastern Shore driving over the bridge through Dartmouth heading towards Main St (Trunk 7) until it turns into Highway 107. You will follow Highway 107 until the end. It comes to a stop when you reach Marine Dr. At this time you will turn right onto Marine Dr (Trunk 7). You will follow Marine Dr (Trunk 7) all the way to Liscomb. As mentioned above the left hand side trail entrance is just before the Liscombe Lodge Resort and the right hand side entrance is past the Resort and over the overpass about 100 meters down the highway. Both entrances will be on your left hand side.
