This is a set of 2 falls basically on top of each other. The top fall which is the larger fall of the two has a pool at its base. This pool at its base creates the second fall down into the river below. There is a large amount of different sized boulders all around the bottom of the top fall. The top fall has high walled cliffs on both sides which slowly lower as you move away from the falls area. The top fall is approx 30 feet high and falls at an angle of approx 90 degrees. The bottom falls is approx 10-15 feet high and fall at different angles as it blasts around the large boulders around the top falls pool.
Important Information – These falls do not offer the opportunity to swim or jump. When the water levels are high you could probably submerge yourself somewhere’s along the river. The entrance to falls is easy to find as there is proper signage. The walk from the general parking area is roughly 1km in length. The first half of your walk is on loose dirt and rocks, it is mostly flat. The second half of your walk is downhill. Some areas while heading downhill have man-made wooden steps built-in. Some areas of the trek down you’ll be walking at an angle upwards to 60-65 degrees so take your time. The parking area for this trail is approx 7.5kms up River Phillip Rd on this right-hand side of the road. The trailhead is at the end of the parking area. Follow the trail straight until you come to a right-hand turn which is heading downhill. Take this right turn and head downhill all the way to the river’s edge just shy of the falls. The hike down is the easy part despite the angles compared to the hike back up so be prepared, it is a lung and leg burner trekking back up.
Directions – These falls are located in Economy, Nova Scotia up River Phillip Rd. If you are leaving Halifax, Nova Scotia you will head towards Truro on Highway 2 (Veterans Memorial Highway). Follow until you reach Truro, you will be taking exit 14A. At the top of the off-ramp turn left onto trunk 4 which turns into the Glooscap Trail (Trunk 2). Follow this highway until you reach a stop sign just passed the Masstown Market. Turn left at this stop sign, the sign will say Glenholme. Follow this road for a short period of time until you come to an intersection, there will be a left-hand turn marked with a sign saying Trunk 2 North. Take this left turn. You will follow the Glooscap Trail (Trunk 2) all the way into the Economy until your destination is on the right-hand side of the road. You are looking for River Phillip Rd, it is a gravel road and has signage.
