McAlese Brook Falls (Hidden Falls), Parrsboro, Nova Scotia

GPS : 45.435751, -64.253218

This is a set of 3 falls located just before the town of Parrsboro off of the Glooscap Trail (Trunk 2). These falls vary in size with the one furthest upstream being the largest. The first 2 you will encounter are both approx 5-7 feet high and the 3rd fall is approx 50 feet high. The first 2 falls fall at an angle of approx 70 degrees as they mostly slide down the rock face. The 3rd fall falls at approx 90 degrees leaving some separation when falling from the rock face in spots. The top 2 falls have pools at there base and the 1st fall continues the river downstream.

Important Information – These falls do allow you to swim and possibly jump at your own risk. The pool at the base of the 3rd fall is large enough for multiple people to swim, it also allows you to jump on the left-hand side of the pool. This jump could be made to be very small or up to 15-20 feet. Make sure to get a good push off if you decide to jump. The 2nd fall has a much smaller and swallower pool at its base but you can still go in for a dip. The 3rd falls continue the river so it’s a spot to wash up your feet or splash some water around. If you wish to climb to the top of the 3rd fall you can do so on a path to the left-hand side of all 3 falls. This path is on loose materials and has a steep incline for a short duration of time. Some rope is present but is exposed to the natural elements so use them at your own risk. The path itself to get to these falls is very short and easy to navigate. Above I provided the general parking area to the trailhead around the top left-hand side of the photo. Do not follow the road up the hill to the right. The path is on loose material but is flat the whole time. It is a human trafficked path through the forest. The path is around 500-600m long to reach the bottom of the first fall from the designated parking area/trailhead. This parking area/trailhead is located directly off of the Glooscap Trail (Trunk 2) heading towards Parrsboro. If you reach Prospect Rd on your right-hand side you have gone too far towards Parrsboro. There is no signage or flagging tape present which is why I provided a photo of the parking area. They truly are hidden to all none locals.

Directions – These falls are located off the Glooscap Trail (Trunk 2) just before the town of Parrsboro. If you are leaving Halifax, Nova Scotia you will head towards Truro on Highway 2 (Veterans Memorial Highway). Follow until you reach Truro, you will be taking exit 14A. At the top of the off-ramp turn left onto trunk 4 which turns into the Glooscap Trail (Trunk 2). Follow this highway until you reach a stop sign just passed the Masstown Market. Turn left at this stop sign, the sign will say Glenholme. Follow this road for a short period of time until you come to an intersection, there will be a left-hand turn marked with a sign saying Trunk 2 North. Take this left turn. You will follow the Glooscap Trail (Trunk 2) all the way to your destination on the right-hand side of the road. With it being an unmarked destination the best idea would be to drive until you reach Prospect Rd. It will be on your right-hand side. Turn around here and look for the parking area which would now be on your left-hand side. Use the above photo to assist you. Park either along the highway or in the parking area.
