This waterfall is one of the largest I have personally been to. It is just 1 fall. I would say the fall is approx 70 feet high and falls at an angle of 90 degrees into the pool below. It is fairly easy to get to minus if the gate is open and the last 100ms but it is worth the trek. This fall has a big sized pool at its base and it is deep as well. The sound of the falls hitting the water in the base below is powerful if you arrive on a day when the volume of water flowing is plentiful.
Important Information – This fall is very large and is worth the trek to go see. You can jump and swim at this fall. The large boulder on the left-hand side of the pool is a good place to jump, do so at your own risk. Always check the water depth before you jump. The pool at the base of the falls is large enough for multiple groups to swim undisturbed. The path to reach this fall is approx 1.5kms and is on gravel, dirt and loose rocks. It starts out flat then gradually starts to slope downwards until you reach another flat area. After this flat area, you will reach an area where the path becomes very difficult. There is a rope tied to the base of the trees, use this rope. The path is very steep in this section and it is on dirt and loose rocks so be careful, watch your step. As for the entirety of the path, it is very straight forward and doesn’t have a lot of options to confuse you. When you enter the path off of the main road you will walk under a canopy of tree branches that create a unique pathway. This will end and start your descend down a gentle hill that will start veering you to the right. Following this right direction, it will level out and continue straight for the remainder of the trail until you reach the difficult section. Remember that the path will become very difficult in the end so don’t stop until you reach this portion of the path. This portion of the path takes you straight down than to your left then to your right, like a zipper, all down hill until you reach the bottom. At the bottom of the hill you will see the falls on your right, the path has multiple routes to the fall in this section as its a small open area on the side of the pool. You can use any of these small, short paths to reach the edge of the pool. A large boulder on the edge horizontal to the fall is a great place to relax and take it all in. This trailhead is on the right hand side of the parking area. This parking area is approx 2kms up Little York Rd on the left hand side. You will be driving up Little York Rd on a small incline, the road will turn to the right, this is where the trailhead and parking area is on the left hand side of the road. Some tagging tape is present. With all this being said, Little York Rd has been going through a private/public use debate for multiple years now. I found a lot of information online but ultimately I decided to check it out for myself. The local homeowner approx 500m’s into the road gated the road in previous years. This gate was opened when I went (2018) and I have seen multiple posts at this location so my assumption is that the road is now permanently public. If you decide to not park beyond the gate, you will have to walk approx 2kms up this road until you reach the trailhead, the trail is approx 1.5kms, so in total your hike would be approx 3.5kms to reach the fall.
Directions – This waterfall is located in Five Islands, Nova Scotia. If you are leaving from Halifax you will drive towards Truro on highway 102 (Veterans Memorial Highway) until exit 14A on your right. At the top of this off ramp you will turn left onto Onslow Rd (Glooscap Trail) also called NS Trunk 2 or Highway 4. Follow this highway until you reach the Masstown Market, just after the Market you will reach a roundabout that you will go around continuing on NS Trunk 2/Highway 4 (Glooscap Trail). You will come to a left-hand turn that says NS Trunk 2 (Glooscap Trail), take this turn heading towards Five Islands. Little York Rd is directly off of NS Trunk 2 (Glooscap Trail) on your right-hand side. This road has signage. If you pass Five Islands Ocean Resort & RV Campground on your left you have gone too far as Little York Rd is on your right-hand side just before this Campground.
