Ettinger Falls, Three Mile Plains, Nova Scotia

GPS : 44.950391, -64.107367

This area contains several falls. The bottom 3 have been named. The middle fall throughout the river is the largest (Ettinger). Starting downstream heading upstream, you will first approach Lower Ettinger Falls which is approx 3-5 feet high falling at an angle of 90 degrees. The second fall is known as Staircase Falls. It falls exactly how it is named, down a naturally made staircase of rock. Each step is approx 2-3 feet high. The third fall is Ettinger Falls. It is approx 15-20 feet high and falls at an 85-degree angle. This fall has a small pool at its base and it becomes deep enough to jump near the base of the falls. Continuing upstream you will encounter another 3-4 small falls around 3-5 feet high, falling at all different angles. This is a unique waterfall (Ettinger) because if the water is flowing just right you can stand directly in the falling water or on the naturally formed ledge to its right.

Important Information – At Ettinger falls you are able to swim and jump. Check the water level before you decide to jump. The hike to get to the main fall (Ettinger) is very easy and short. There is a small path that is approx 50ms long off of a gravel road that leads you to the base of the main fall. This path has a decline of approx 45 degrees. As for the gravel road it is off of, you will be required to walk approx 800ms uphill from the gated entrance. The road is maintained, it is a gravel road. The path down to the main fall will be located on your left-hand side once you reach the top of the hill and level out. You can hear the falls from the gravel road, it is that close. On your walk up there will be many options to take on your left-hand side. Remember to walk all the way up the hill and level out before you turn left. I mentioned gated entrance because it is important to not park inside this gate as the gate is locked at random times and if you’re locked inside its a $200.00 fine. Park just before the gate on the right-hand side of the gravel road.

Directions – These falls are located in Three Mile Plains. If leaving from Halifax you will travel towards the valley on Highway 101 (Harvest Highway). Take Exit 5 and turn left at the end of the off-ramp onto Highway 14 (Evangeline Trail). Follow until you reach the end. On your right you’ll see a small strip mall and gas station, take your left which continues on as Evangeline Trail (Highway 1). On your right, you will turn onto Three Mile Plains Cross Rd, follow this road until you reach the intersection with Windsor Back rd. Turn right onto Windsor Back Rd. The Gravel road leading you up to the falls will be on your left shortly after turning onto Windsor Back rd. It is unnamed but look for it between two houses. You will pass Mason’s apples on your left, the gravel road is located at the edge of their orchard. The civic address is 784 Windsor Back Rd. Not even 100 feet into the gravel road there is a black and yellow speed bump, just after this speed bump, you will see a house on your right, continue straight until you see the gate. Park and start your short walk.
