Crystal Falls, Greenwood, Nova Scotia

GPS : 44.937675, -64.878274

This is a single Fall. The fall is approx 15-20 feet high. It falls at about a 70-degree angle into the pool below. The pool at the base of the fall is very large and is also deep close to the fall. You can gradually walk into the pool from the edges opposite of the fall. The rock faces on both sides of the fall allow you access to the top of the fall if you decide you do not wish to climb it from the pool below. This fall is unique. If you choose to swim across the pool below, a naturally formed set of steps is at its base. The first one is underwater on the left-hand side of the fall so make sure to feel around for it. The steps lead you up about 3-4 feet into a shallow pool located about a quarter of the way up the fall to the left. This pool is a great vantage point of the fall itself or of the pool below. It resembles a small bathtub located just to the side of a waterfall.

Important Information – This fall is a great swimming location. You can also jump from either side near the fall itself as the pool is deep enough. A small rope is tied to a tree on the right-hand side of the fall but I chose not to use it. Use it or jump at your own risk. You can also jump from the small pool or the steps up to the small pool as well. The trail to the fall is a standard beaten down the path on dirt with exposed tree roots and rocks. Little to no hills, the hills present are a gradual incline or decline. The length of the trail can vary due to how far you decide to drive your vehicle down the dirt road from the main road. (Harmony Rd). This dirt road is wide enough for 1 vehicle but the surface becomes very bumpy in sections and some rocks will block most common cars. Trucks and Jeeps would have no issue following the dirt road all the way to its end. Once at the end of the dirt road you will see a fork in the road. On your right, it goes downhill towards a small bridge that crosses over the river and on your left, you will see a small incline behind a gated entrance. The route you want to take is the option on the left. Follow this path for approx 100m’s. On the right-hand side of the path, you’ll see a sign nailed to a tree saying, Crystal Falls. If the sign is not present the path is carved out well enough to pick it up. Follow this path all the way to the falls. It should take you about 15-20 minutes at a slow to medium speed. The distance from this entrance is approx 1-1.5kms. If you choose to not drive down the dirt road at all. Walking from the main road would take you around 45 minutes to an hour, it will approx be 3-3.5kms.

Directions – The entrance to the dirt road that brings you to the path that travels to the falls is off of Harmony Rd in Greenwood, Nova Scotia. Leaving from Halifax you will drive towards the Valley on highway 101 (Harvest Highway). Take exit 16 turning left at the top of the off-ramp, driving into Aylesford, Nova Scotia on Victoria Rd. Follow Victoria Rd until you reach Harmony Rd. It will be on your right-hand side after the intersection in Millville with Hall rd once you enter Nicholsville. Follow Harmony Rd until you see Greenwood Rd on your right, once you see Greenwood Rd slow down as the first dirt road you see on your left-hand side is the dirt road used to access the trail towards Crystal Falls. You will more then likely see multiple cars parked here, if you do not, you will see the shoulder of the road has plenty of room to park just in front of the entrance.
